Chiropractic Basics

Chiropractic care is a natural, drug-free approach to restoring and maintaining your body’s health. Each year millions of people choose chiropractic care to improve the quality of their life.

Doctors of Chiropractic are mainly concerned with the spine and its relationship with the nervous system which ultimately control not just some but ALL of your body’s functions. Read more about how chiropractic care changed the life of our very own Dr. Shampine.

Dr. Shampine's Story

Doctor Robin Shampine - Highlands ChiropracticYears ago, something happened to me that changed my life forever.

I was a medic in the Air Force at the time. One day, while responding to a call, I was lifting a patient into the ambulance when I felt a stabbing pain in my low back. My legs buckled and I ended up on the ground with the patient, still strapped to the gurney, on top of me.

They admitted me to the hospital for bed rest, traction and narcotics. There I was, a military fighting machine using a bed-pan and unable to walk. After three weeks of this, they started to talk about surgery, medical disability and discharging from the service. They actually wanted to fire me from the military, as I was no longer of any use to them in the state I was in. This was a far cry from the triathlon I had run two weeks before my injury.

Then, a friend came by for my daily wheelchair trip around the hospital (I was allowed one hour a day out of traction) and kidnapped me to his car. He drove me to see his doctor. This new doctor did an exam, took some films, and then "adjusted" my spine. The adjustment didn't hurt, it actually felt good. I got relief, and I was able to walk back to the car. I sneaked out to visit this new doctor for a week. My military doctor was so impressed with my "miraculous recovery" that he You have no right to be sick.discharged me from the hospital and I returned to full active duty with no restrictions! Oh, did I mention that the doctor my friend took me to was a chiropractor? Chiropractic worked so well for me, and I was so impressed with the other 'miracles' I saw in his office, that I eventually went to chiropractic school myself.

It's strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their low back problems. Also, they come to me with their headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, carpal tunnel syndrome, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs and athletic injuries, just to name a few.

Several times a day, patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results, it's as simple as that!

Being a chiropractor can be tough because there are a host of so-called "experts" out there, telling people a lot of things about my profession that are just plain ridiculous. But the studies speak for themselves, like the Virginia study that showed that over 90% of patients who saw a chiropractor were satisfied with their results. That's just incredible!

Millions of Americans are without health insurance, and many of those who are insured have found that their benefits are reduced. That's where chiropractic comes in. Many people find that they actually save money on their health care expenses by seeing a chiropractor. Another way to save... published, peer-reviewed research indicates that the immune system may be enhanced by chiropractic adjustments. The immune system is the system that helps the body fight colds, the flu and many other sicknesses. Although all people respond differently to care, maybe you won't be running off to the doctor as much once you start chiropractic.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robin D. Shampine
