Harry Alter settled in Rock Island in 1900 and took work in a scrap yard that had been operating since 1898. Almost nothing is known about the very early days of that company, but when Morris Alter arrived in America in 1905, he joined his brother Harry in the business, and by 1908, the two men were joint proprietors of Davenport Iron & Metal Company at 522 West 2nd Street. In 1911, the company moved to 425 East 3rd Street. Morris and his son Frank eventually bought the business from Harry in 1920 and renamed it Davenport Iron & Machinery.

In 1935, the company changed names once again and was renamed Alter Iron & Machinery Company. Just a few years later in 1938, the name was simplified to Alter Company and is now known as Alter Metal Recycling. The Davenport yard is now 109 years old.

Davenport AMR accepts ferrous and non-ferrous metals as well as appliances to be demanufactured. Davenport has roll-off trailers, containers, and lugger boxes providing a variety of sizes to meet your needs. Scheduled pick-ups are available or call in for scheduling and other long-term projects. The Davenport location also offers a cash-dispensing machine for immediate payment on scrap deliveries.

Our Yard Supervisor is Lorenzo Martinez. Lorenzo has been with Alter for 30 years. Our non-ferrous supervisor is Denny Chenoweth. Denny has been an Alter employee for 22 years. You may also run into Chad Awbrey and our scale buyer, Marilyn Thomas.

The Bettendorf facility is dedicated to serving Alcoa's scrap processing and storage needs exclusively. It takes scrap in, but doesn’t buy scrap from the general public. Alter started processing and recycling scrap for Alcoa in the early 1980s and has been at the present location in Bettendorf since 1990.
