Legal Grounds was established in 1998 on a side street next to the courthouse in the small town of Rutherfordton, NC.  In the beginning, legal grounds was simply a small coffee shop specializing in gourmet coffees, espresso drinks and homemade pastries. Soon after opening legal grounds began serving breakfast and lunch, nothing fancy just soups and sandwiches, which was an instant success. With the success of the growing food business, legal grounds expanded on to Mainstreet and tripled in size. The growing demand met many changes from extended hours, expanded menu and even live entertainment in the evenings. Now the once seeming ghost town became a happening night spot. Though the growth continued in 2002 when the town of Rutherfordton passed the sale of mixed beverages. Legal Grounds was the first to capitalize on this and built the first full-service bar in downtown. In trying to keep the coffee shop theme going, legal grounds covered their entire bar in coffee beans and became one of the most unique restaurant, bar and coffee shop around. With this expansion legal grounds became and still is the most happening spot around.
