She studied music and sciences throughout her high school and college years, eventually graduating from McNeese State University with a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music degree from Baylor University. She taught elementary school and high school students and sang opera professionally with the Houston Grand Opera before finally surrendering to her deepest desire to be a doctor.
