TOO MANY ACRONYMS AND COMPUTER JARGON

The professionals at Michiana PC will explain technology in terms that normal people can understand.

DON'T JUST TRASH IT!

Many states prohibit the dumping of items such as monitors, computers, and printers. Instead they must be properly disposed of.  Many non-profit organizations will accept donations of used, working computer equipment.  If you can not find a non-profit, Michiana PC will accept your old computer free of charge. This is our way of keeping our environment clean and our landfills free of harmful pollutants

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU RECYCLE:

Erase your old data.  Deleting your old data or formatting your hard drive is not enough.  Professional thieves could still retrieve value information such as bank accounts and passwords.  We can permanently delete your data so that you can rest assured that you are protecting yourself against data theft from that old hard drive

DO I REALLY NEED ANTI-VIRUS?

Absolutely! You have probably heard terms like virus, worm, spyware, Trojan horse. Whatever the name, they all spell trouble for your computer, your data, and your privacy.  These threats are out on the web and you encounter them simply by shopping or checking email. You don't even have to go to "bad" sites.  Once you are infected, your personal information, passwords, and other valuable data are at risk. The dangers range from slightly annoying to an all out ambush of your machine. Some take your computer and turn it into a droid for purposes of sending spam or other illicit activities.

Which antivirus should you use? Each person seems to have their favorite.  A Michiana PC we can provide the budget minded with a free version from AVG, a leader in the industry. There is some debate as to the effectiveness of free versus paid antivirus. We also offer the Trend MicroSuite which offers total protection for web, spam, and firewall.

HARD DRIVES FAIL AND DATA IS LOST

Did you know that all hard drives eventually fail?  Large companies know this to be a fact. Tom Dugan, director of technical services at Recovery Networks, a Philadelphia-based business continuity services provider, protects his data. "I have to assume every drive could fail."

Servers and large data centers use what is called redundancy to keep their data safe.  They use multiple hard drives so that the data is on more than one disc.  Then, when a failure does happen, no data is lost. Most also do what is called off site backup.

Off site backup is where large companies back up their priceless data to another location, automatically, over the internet. Then, if a disaster such as a fire or tornado occurs, their data is in a safe place.  You can have the same protection that the big corporations have. Michiana PC will  quickly and securely backup  your priceless pictures and your Quicken or Money files over the internet.  You get the same advantage as the "big boys" at a fraction of the cost.  Remote backup from Michiana PC gives you the data redundancy that you need and the safety of offsite backup in case of a disaster.
