The Daily Pilot started off in 1907 as a weekly newspaper named the Newport News. Since then, it's been known as the Newport Harbor Pilot, the Orange Coast Daily Pilot and the Newport Beach-Costa Mesa Pilot.

The Pilot, with a circulation of about 30,000, has won numerous awards over the years, including best community newspaper in the state, awarded by the California Newspaper Publishers Assn., in 2004. In addition to its print product, the DailyPilot.com, launched in 2005, has more than 9,000 readers every day. It’s distributed Tuesday through Sunday and is home delivered to Los Angeles Times subscribers in the area, distributed at news racks, and free home delivery. In 2010, the Daily Pilot expanded to Irvine on Sundays.
