Introducing Certified Massage Therapist Claudia Mukai

I love being a massage therapist. The way I feel when I do massage brings me nothing but joy. I feel the difference I can make when a tense muscle on a back or a hand or an arm that has been overworked or injured suddenly gives up and becomes softer and relaxed. The tight muscle just melts away.

The way I do massage is simple. I talk with my patient to find out if she is having any problems, like lower back pain. I can either start a massage with the patient laying their back or their stomach. When I spread the lotion on their limbs I can feel the way the muscle responds and take it from there. I do not have a set routine. I do what the body tells me to do. I use moist heat packs on the back and a ceramic pumice stone with an emu and tea tree foot cream on the feet. My massages last an hour and I don’t accept tips. It is recommended that everybody should have a massage once a month.

What is your background in massage?

I attended Southern California School of massage first with a massage technician course (100 hours) in 1993. In June 2002 I continued on the Therapist (500 hours). Finally, Holistic Health Practitioner (1000 hours). I am certified by the National Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodyworkers Association. I am certified by the State of California and New Jersey. I stopped working full time as a massage therapist to assist my husband in his office and because my husband joined the army after 9/11. I tried to do massage as much as possible to keep up my skills.

Why is a medical setting good?

It is a more controlled environment. I focus more on health and relaxation. I do not sell products. I am able to address some medical conditions that massage might help.

What other services are offered in your office?

I work in a beautiful office that reminds everyone of a comfortable living room. With a kind and caring staff who assist Dr. Moses Mukai, Uro/Gynecologist. He offers complete gynecology and Urology care for women.

What does a typical massage appointment look like?

Since we are a doctor’s office there is a registration form, confidentiality form and a brief history to fill out. After that I will take you back to the massage room and explain the type of massage I do. I will ask about medical problems that you want addressed. I will make sure you are completely comfortable with me and understand massage before I ask you to undress to your level of comfort. After you undress you lie on top of the massage table and cover yourself up with the top sheet. I will provide an extra towel to place over your chest for extra protection. I want you to feel as comfortable as possible. A round pillow is place under your knees to take the strain off your back. In a normal 60-minute massage I start on the face, shoulders and neck. Next I massage the arms and then front of the legs. Patient turns over lying on their stomach. I massage the back and the backside of the legs. I use moist heat packs on the back and massage back of legs and feet while the heat packs do their magic. When massage is finished I will assist he patient in sitting up. I massage the neck and shoulders again; making sure the patient is awake and able to communicate well before leaving the room. My technique is basic Swedish-American with some deep tissue as needed. I use an organic massage cream on the body and Emu foot cream on the feet.

Is massage covered by medical insurance?

Some policies do cover massage. You have to call your insurance company and ask. I will gladly bill insurance and we also accept the Flex card. I work with a wonderful group of people. Dr. Moses T. Mukai, D.O is a Urogynecologist (a blend of urology and gynecology.) In our office we specialize in care for women. We are totally professional, fun loving and completely dedicated to our patients and families. Dr. Mukai offers low prices for massage for his patients and their family. We also offer our massage to patients outside our office, but prefer women only. We are part of St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare System.

More about Swedish Massage

Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross-fiber) and vibration/shaking. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness, and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee over a period of eight weeks. It has also been shown to be helpful in individuals with poor circulation. The development of Swedish massage is credited to Per Henrik Ling, through the Dutch practitioner John George Mezger adopted the French names to denote the basic strokes. The term “Swedish” massage is not really known in the country of Sweden, where it is called “Classic” massage.
