Respect, Discipline, and Control are extremely important principles, and they are firmly in place at the Larry Davenport Karate Studio, LDKS.  Our goal is to help all of our students enhance their lives, no matter how old or young they are.   We believe that a huge part of enhancing one’s life is accomplished by developing sound leadership skills.  Learning to set and achieve responsible goals, as we do in our belt ranking system, is a significant part of becoming a leader.

Becoming physically stronger and mentally sharper helps develop confidence and self-esteem.   Proper training and controlling your body movements enables a student to better focus and concentrate on what he or she is doing. Teaching and assisting others will greatly improve communication skills.  The idea of caring enough to help others is a great quality.  These are some of the things that we encourage and teach.

Discipline is a trait that seems to be lacking in today’s society.  However, if you are going to accomplish anything worthwhile at all, a lot of discipline has to be involved.  If you come to our karate classes of a regular basis and become stronger, more physically fit, and better coordinated it takes a lot of discipline.

We have had a lot of older people that are surprised and amazed as to how their strength, balance, and flexibility improves.  Mr. Pete McCoy  is our oldest student at 72 years old.  He is one of our Black Belts, and he still trains, teaches, inspires others, and is very active in the Community of Alexandria.

Hannah Price, who is from Elwood, was an introvert at a very young age.  She is now a teenager and will soon be testing for her Black Belt. Her confidence and self-esteem has soared.  She is an excellent karate student and is now beginning to lead exercises,   Hannah loves to participate in the intense self defense training and she also enjoys the light contact sparring. Her transition has been no less than phenomenal.

The names and the stories go on and on.  This will continue as long as I can train, teach my students, and inspire others.   One of the things that never ceases to amaze me is the fact that someone who doesn’t even know who we are, is getting ready to walk into our dojo.  And because she or he did, their life will be profoundly changed forever in a positive manner.    Will that be you?
