Details

Carnegie constructed 1,679 libraries in the United States; hundreds have been demolished. 277 are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Carnegie’s Classical Revival building of brick and Indiana stone trim was placed on the Register 1995. It was an active library until 1975; in 1976 it became the art center. The Carnegie Art Center is raising funds to continue the restoration of the library to 21st century building and energy conservation standards, so that it remains a viable public space for the Buffalo Niagara community. Almost $225,000 has been raised toward restoration; total rehabilitation costs are $582,000 (Flynn Battaglia Architects, PC, 2004).
