The Eco-Justice Center, an environmental education center, was founded in 2004 by the Racine Dominicans.

Protecting the land, as well as the plant and animal species that live on the property, is vital to the Racine Dominican Eco-Justice Center. So too, is preserving the farm buildings that date from the 1870's onward. When our society is prone to tear down rather than fix up, when culture says that bigger and newer is better than smaller and older, we at the Eco-Justice Center aim to model sustainable, simple living, reverencing the land and all who have lived in this place before us.

Organic gardening, raising araucana chickens, geese, ducks, and caring for five alpacas are some ways that we are living in a mutually enhancing relationship with Earth and those who share this land with us. Fleece from the alpacas is used for spinning, weaving, knitting, and felting; manure from the alpacas, chickens, geese, and ducks is composted and used in the organic garden. Extra garden produce is shared with those in need through Racine's North Side Food Pantry and Love and Charity.

Hermitage:  Retreat Cabin

Life is sometimes hectic and one aches for solitude in a quiet place. The Hermitage at the Eco-Justice Center offers just that to guests. Even in the midst of winter, visitors find a cozy atmosphere in this one room cabin with fireplace, comfy chair and bed, and all the essentials for simple living amid the beauty of nature. Come to rest, read, relax, renew, write, create, and enjoy. Contact the Center to make arrangements or to give the gift of a stay at the Hermitage to a friend.

Located in a wooded area south of the main house, our Hermitage, built in 2010, is available for rent by individuals or couples for a day, weekend or week at a time. The one room cabin features a fireplace, dining area, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and a composting toilet. Enjoy the views of nature from the large picture window. In addition, the screened in front porch provides a comfortable fresh-air sitting area.

Green features of the Hermitage include composite decking, reclaimed trim, green jean insulation, and steel roofing. The flooring and kitchen counter are made from a black walnut tree grown on our property.
