Proper soccer equipment starts at ground level. In footwear alone, a frequent player will use about four different types of shoe /cleat combinations.

"It depends what kind of ground you're playing on," In summer, when the ground is dry and hard, a player's legs benefit from one type of shoe /cleat set-up. In fall, with moist, soft ground, the player may switch to fewer, screw-in cleats.

Playing indoors, the best shoe will depend upon whether the surface has artificial turf.

Upper 90 Soccer Shop stocks about 50 to 70 types of shoes. Footwear and cleats will comprise about 50 percent of the inventory.

Other merchandise categories include: replica uniforms and hats of different national teams and club teams; soccer posters; balls; portable goals; socks; goalie gloves and equipment; shin guards; warm-up jackets and pants; and tape for wrapping a sore limb or ankle.

Beyond the merchandise, Upper 90 Soccer Shop wants to be a "contact place" for information about where to play soccer -for example, how to connect with the Racine Spartans, a local club.

"In the past, if you don't know where to go, you don't sign your kid up," Toscano said. "Anything you want to know about soccer, you should be able to get it here."

That will include a small library of coaching videos, he said."Anybody can play soccer," he said, even a first-timer. "You get better. The hardest thing is just getting out there."
