Saint Louis, MO

While I would like review number 100 to have been for a St. Louis business, I decided, while I was up visiting my alma mater (and brother who is still there), that if there were any other place for it to come from it would be some where in Kenosha. It is where I got my yelping start, senior year, fall of 2008, as I really got into the local restaurant scene and trying new places. Kenosha/Racine has its fair share of local eateries and especially watering holes. I've heard some stats that call it the town with the most bars per capita in the US. I believe it and wish I had time to try them all. My first three years I was really isolated to campus, not being 21 didn't help either, but I look forward to trips back to give more a go.

Now for what this review is all about. Jack's Cozy Cafe! WOW! I found this place on yelp back while I was still in school, but some times I had a hard time convincing others to branch out. It really is luck that we got to go yesterday. We had decided on going to an old favorite who, to my luck, changed up their Sunday brunch buffet (Boathouse gets their own update) and off we were to Jacks.

The storefront, as indicated in the pictures, doesn't help them out much, I think they have their own group of steady followers, so really no help needed. We had no wait for three at about 11 on Sunday. I would guess they have between 12 and 15 tables. They filled up as we were leaving. Also its 20% off if you go w/in 2 hours of open.

We started with one of the larger cinnamon rolls I have ever had, with some of the best icing. The lady at the table next to us informed us that the lady waiting on us makes them from scratch, along with the large muffins they offer and I think just about everything on the menu. This is the real deal local diner/cafe. I had the Brezza, which as someone else noted is a breakfast pizza on a croissant with sausage gravy, eggs, cheese, choice of meat, and veggies. SO GOOD! Jacki had a DIY skillet which was standard, large, but no real wow. The two pieces of toast it came with were good, not quite breakfast-like toast, but delicious. Doug won with providing the most order envy when he went with the pumpkin pancakes, which came with a cinnamon sugar butter. So fluffy and delicious. I got a couple bites out of him by offering a slice of my Brezza and Jacki's leftovers. I wish I still lived in Kenosha or didn't have so many places still to try there, or this would definitely be my go to place. If you live in Kenosha you owe it to yourself to go, or even passing through on your way to Milwaukee. Kenosha's lake front is a beautiful place in the spring/summer/fall. Winter can be pretty questionable, but man was the lake ON this Sunday!

I went here while I was visiting a friend in Kenosha.  The restaurant is cute and homey.  Although it's a small place, we didn't wait for a table.  I ordered an ultra-modified Weight Watchers-friendly omelet and it was perfect.  The owner greeted us 1/2 way through the meal and asked how everything was.  I thought the portion sizes were good, but I'm not from the mid-west.  I wish we could have made it for the fish fry on Fridays!

It is a small, cute restaurant. The food is wonderful. The house toast is especially highly recommended. All of the ingredients were fresh and tasty. I will definitely be going back.

When I picture Kenosha, Jack's Cozy Cafe is definitely a prime example of what type of place it is.    Older, blue-collared, some rough edges but all in all, a small town feel.  Heck, the word "cozy" in the cafe's name says enough!  Truly it's "Where Friends Gather," per its motto.  Everyone in here is a regular...with exception for myself, my sister and my boyfriend.  They sure didn't act any different or stare but instead scooted over and made space for us.  After all, the place is only made up of 10 tables so that you can easily become one of them.  With mugs reading the regular's names on them, it may become a bit awkward but don't let it get to ya!  Again...Cozy.

Once you check out the menu options, you become even cozier between your new friends who argue over which item you should try: a 60 year old motorcyclist with tattoos 'n mohawk & purple-haired punk girl with a limp and 2-year old in her arms.  They not only offer customer diversity but Cholesterol free options (a list of 'em).  Yet for the real stuff, look to the following page where you got "The Kitchen Sink" (it's a surprise--a mashup of their favorites served with 2 eggs and toast), "The Heart Stopper" (a 5 egg omelet with the works and toast), & Italian Hash (Italian sausage and spices simmered together and topped with eggs and mozzarella cheese with house toast--after all, Kenosha is known for it's Italian community).

With that said, I have stop for a moment of silence to thank Jack for the Brezza.  What's a Brezza?  You got it:  A croissant crust topped with sausage gravy, two cheeses, sausage, bacon or ham with onions, green peppers and mushrooms.  Picture a pizza for breakfast that goes for only $6.50 a personal pan!  You can't beat that!!  [See business pics to believe it]

I was pleased with my visit and knew it was my kinda place when my aunt recommended it.  Check it out for yourself to not only support the family owned businesses and get a reasonable, delicious breakfast but also to see a friendly side of Kenosha!
