Black Bear Camp & RV is a campground with a ton of history. Located in the historic area of Shannondale, West Virginia, and with over six hundred acres available for recreation, Black Bear Camp & RV has something for everyone.
A Brief History:
In the 1700's, William Fairfax obtained some 29,000 odd acres of the Virginia colony. This land was referred to as the Shannondale Grant. It quickly became known that large deposits of iron ore were present and available. Being close to two large rivers also made the area ideal for iron production. In 1839, two entrepreneurs built an iron furnace that could produce up to three tons of iron daily. The buildings that surrounded the furnace are believed to be destroyed during the Civil War. However the furnace's impressive stone stack remains intact and is located on the property at Black Bear Camp & RV. The log home that sits on the property housed Col. Mosby and his men, "The Mosby Raiders" during the Civil War. Many men are believed to have been captured at the location.
Historians will be available, on the weekends, to give information about the furnace and the ajacent ruins of the once world renown Shannondale Springs resort, referred to in the early 1800's as President James Monroe's "Summer White House".
